The Winter Dance Party show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on February 2, 1959, was a last minute booking for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. As a result, there were
no
gig posters made for this show – everything you see on eBay or elsewhere were created much later, in tribute.
However, there were other stops on the ill-fated tour where custom posters were distributed locally before shows.
This poster was produced by meticulously recreating what would have been, if gig posters were made in 1959 for the Surf Ballroom show. It is modeled after a poster that survived from the show at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato, Minnesota on January 25, 1959.
The surviving Kato Ballroom poster sold at auction for 5,000 in 2020.
