WWI 2nd Division Tunic9th Infantry, 2nd Division Insignia
Collar Discs
1 Overseas Chevron
WWI Tunic, private purchase type. Shoulder sleeve insignia, collar discs and bullion overseas chevron. Has a very attractive shoulder sleeve insignia of 1st BN. 9th Infantry, 2nd Division. Insignia is a wool felt pentagon with applied white linen star with painted Indian head. This type insignia is seen often on uniforms, I've included some photos of other known original 2nd Division painted insignia for comparison.
What is unusual about this particular tunic, it appears to have once been a officer's style. You can see the "ghosts" of officer braid on the cuffs. Also the standing collar was not pierced for discs application. May have been purchased by the wearer as used and then converted, either during the occupation or after returning stateside. Has two old repairs to holes, again an indication it may have been purchased as used.
The collar discs are U.S. and Artillery. Don't know why it has artillery and not infantry. Removing the nuts indicates the discs have been on the tunic for a long, long time. Verdigris on the artillery disc with transfer to the cloth shows it's been there for some time.
Tunic has only small imperfections, remains very nice. Lining is good, sleeve lining is soiled from lots of period wear. Cincinnati tailor's label in inside pocket, with name, which looks to be H.H. Musser.
